What are Jalite AAA Photoluminescent signs?
Jalite AAA Photoluminescent Safety Signs boast excellent initial brightness and overall luminance performance, staying brighter up to 4 times longer than other photoluminescent materials.

Is there any benefit to photoluminescent signs?
The benefit of photoluminescent safety signs is that if there is a power cut the material glows in the dark, showing up at some distance, providing an effective, bright contrast for text and images, ensuring that safety signs are quickly recognised.  This helps people to orientate themselves so that they can react effectively and evacuate efficiently, potentiall making a major difference in an emergency situation.

What is photoluminescence?
Photo luminescence is a special kind of phosphorescence which is activated by common light sources such as daylight, tungsten filament and fluorescent lights.

Are there any laws and regulations for safety signs?
Legislation and regulation states the following:
Where should I fit Escape Route Location signs?
Escape route location signs like fire exit and exit signs are signs that identify the direction of travel or exit within a building. It is recommended that a sign is placed every time there is a change of direction or at a decision point. The most common mistake made with these signs occurs when fitting signs above doors. If the escapee should go through the door to get out of the building, most people fit a Fire Exit Sign with an arrow pointing downwards, towards the door. This is not correct. The arrow should in fact be pointing upwards, indicating that the person should walk in the direction of the arrow, through the door.

Do I need to fit Emergency Exit and Door Release signs?
Doors that have security devices, especially doors that are specifically used for escape should use signs to indicate its operating instructions. These signs reduce evacuation time and speed egress from a building during an emergency.

What is a Safe Condition sign?
Safe condition signs is a category used by the Standards to categorise first aid equipment, location and emergency instructions for people with special needs.  Safe condition signs should be prominently displayed.

What is a Mandatory Notice sign?
Mandatory notices help in preventing the spread of fire by informing building occupents of the mandatory requirements.  These mandatory notice signs should be displayed prominently on both sides of the doors and can be used as part of a formal fire safety training.

Why do I need a Fire Action Notice in my building?
It is a legislation requirement that all building occupants must be informed of fire safety informaiton and one of these would include instructions on what to do in the event of a fire.  A good solution is by siting Fire Action notices conspicuously within the building to help reinforce formal training and act as a constant reminder.

It is recommended that you choose a fire action notice that is simple, includes step-by-step instructions and one that uses graphical symbols from Standards to increase comprehension.

Do I have to have Fire Alarm and Fire-Fighting Equipment signs?
Legislation requires that any non-automatic fire-fighting equipment (fire extinguishers, fire alarms etc) provided should be easy to access, simple to use and indicated by signs.  You can meet this requirement by placing signs conspicuously above the equipment to identify and, if necessary, include a sign that has simple instructions on how to operate the equipment.

It is also recommended that to greatly reduce the risks of the inappropriate use of fire extinguishers that you include a fire extinguisher identification that shows the type of extinguisher and the type of fire it can or cannot be used on.

When do I need to fit hazardous Materials and Atmospheres Signs?
Hazard warning signs are a legislation requirement, unless deemed unnecessary by a risk assessment.

When do I need to fit Prohibition Signs?
Legislation states that, after a hazard has been identified and measures have been taken to inform occupants, an appropriate control measure should be reinforced.

What is the difference between Rigid PVC and Self Adhesive Vinyl?
Rigid PVC  is the material used to make bank and membership cards, though is a little thicker (1.3mm nominal) when it comes to safety signs. It is not very flexible, but is very durable. Our PVC signs are not self adhesive so have no sticky backing. They require the use of glue (High bond strength and waterproof variety is recommended).
Self Adhesive Vinyl is thinner (1mm nominal) and much more flexible. The vinyl signs have a backing which when removed allows the sign to be stuck to a surface in the same way as a sticker.
